The Caminos de Santiago are a network of routes, leading, like tributaries into a great stream, all towards Santiago de Compostela. An over 1000 year old pilgrimage route, the Caminos have recently seen a surge in interest, hosting a half a million pilgrims or more a year.

Such interest leads to commerce. And while commerce also sustains the Caminos, it can become a drain on them if money flows away from it, and information about it is siloed, hidden behind walls, unshared and closely guarded for profit.

Ultreia.me aims to redemocratize and reopen the Caminos by bringing the wisdom, experiences, and knowledge of locals, hospitaler@s (operators of hostels on the Ways), and pilgrims back to the commons. We collect knowledge, from albergues (hostels), routes, water sources along the routes tp vegan and vegetarial spots, LGBTQ friendly spots, points of interest, and more and both offer it for free and openly as well as share what we've learned to places like OpenStreetMap so it might be reused freely by anyone.

Ultreia operates three servers (two in Finland, one in Spain), and supports local efforts to map the Caminos, remove hateful messages and stickers on the Ways, and is written and maintained by a group of mates from Germany, Spain, the US, and the United Kingdom. Your donations fund the servers and pay for paint and sticker removers.
